But the original discussion (for this tangent) was whether or not some degree holders had earned their degrees. If students can be admitted based on political and social connections, then the answer is most certainly that yes, some degree holders have not earned their degrees.

Big difference ... a honorary degree is not equivalent to a normal degree,
which is why you have to include a h.c. (honoris causae) in your title (for example: Dr. rer. nat. h.c.) so that everyone knows that you didn't earn your degree the normal way, but that instead it was bestowed upon you, for one reason or the other
