I actually asked this (innocent) question myself a year ago to my brother.

He has a MSc in computational fluid dynamics and his job is as a fire safety engineer. All he does is build models to calculate fire spread to investigate arson cases or to certify public spaces as safe. Simulations have been run on this topic -- it's not a new idea. It's just a very dumb idea, and there's lots of science behind it.

If you're truly interested, I could ask him to write up a summary with specifics.
