I know these people in real life. All of the starting wide receivers from my senior year were acquaintances or friends of mine. They did just fine. Yeah, they weren't as smart as the brightest non-athletes, and I wouldn't bet on them to pass a Compsci class from Stan Eisenstadt or a Financial Math course from Donald Brown, but they did just fine in perfectly reasonable majors. The elite private universities have terrible football teams, but the kids are intelligent and they graduate.

You're way out of your league here, guessing about schools you don't go to, and a sport you don't even like. I wouldn't expect you to know this because you don't watch football, but the Ivy League schools are probably not among the top 200 college teams in the nation. The arrangement you described might happen in the SEC, but it's unnecessary in the Ivy League because the players are much better at academics than they are at football.

It's not the public Canadian universities that are known for political/financial manipulation of academics, it's typically the private big-name American ones.

Hell, this happens all the time with many of the football players on a lesser level. They must maintain minimum grades, sure -- but many of the teachers are compelled to ensure they do meet those minimum grades.

I'm still curious about this. What is the "greater level?" We've already covered the "lesser level" of football players.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- As the learning specialist working with the most academically challenged athletes at Florida State, Brenda Monk was confronted each year with recruits who would seem to have little chance of surviving on a college campus. Their deficiencies were laid out in transcripts and psycho-educational reports submitted during the admissions process.

Sometimes, the athletes knew exactly what they were up against. She recalls a conversation with one such player in her office at Doak Campbell Stadium.
