I don't think they quite rise to that level of stupidity, but that's not the point. The point is that Democrats clearly are attacking Romney, even if they're using very spurious arguments (in some cases) to do so.

The Dems are attacking Romney stretching the truth whenever necessary.
The Repugs are attacking Obama stretching (ok, really stretching) the truth whenever necessary.
It must be election season. Anyone that expected anything less is delusional.

What kind of messed up world are you living in where a major newspaper can report on official government documents being uncovered and this is apparently just conspiracy theory to you? The official dialogue has always been 'We had intelligence reports, but nothing specific and we're always getting intelligence reports so these didn't stand out as that different'.

If in fact the truth is that the intelligence community was sending constant warnings of this threat, and those warnings were being ignored by administration officials who thought they knew better than the professionals then that is highly damning to all those concerned. This latest story does not prove that, but points in that direction. Whatever the truth of the matter is, should it just be covered over in your opinion?

I don't think it does. If anything it highlights that they were getting conflicting input. Now choosing which to believe is another issue.

Are we reading different articles? I'm genuinely confused by where you're getting this conflicting reports stuff from.

An intelligence official and a member of the Bush administration both told me in interviews that the neoconservative leaders who had recently assumed power at the Pentagon were warning the White House that the C.I.A. had been fooled; according to this theory, Bin Laden was merely pretending to be planning an attack to distract the administration from Saddam Hussein, whom the neoconservatives saw as a greater threat. Intelligence officials, these sources said, protested that the idea of Bin Laden, an Islamic fundamentalist, conspiring with Mr. Hussein, an Iraqi secularist, was ridiculous, but the neoconservatives’ suspicions were nevertheless carrying the day.
Who to believe. I do agree they believed the wrong group.

Well we know that now. Of course they believed the wrong group. They got the wrong answer. But was it wrong at the time to choose that group? Not necessarily. We really can't know that.

I'll like to know what 'neocon leaders at the Pentagon' actually means. Were they administration people or military people?

Yes, it was wrong to view Iraq as a clear and present danger to the US.

...but the timing is the story here.

Interesting how it's all about Bush, but doesn't mention Clinton, eh?
