I'd like to thank BK for defibrillating this thread with a silly remark.
Imran: Why should proximity have any bearing on our respect/treatment of strangers? I'm not speaking from a Christian POV here, what with the universal-love requirement. But if A and B are both strangers, why should either's place of residence influence our emotions toward them?

My view is that patriotism/nationalism does a good job combatting tribalism and the "I've got mine" effect.
I appreciate that some people can not be tribal or selfish to such an extant without being nationalistic, and can see why such people would want to move past nationalism. But when I look at the tribalism/etc that seems to come to the forefront when nationalism is made subordinate, I think that we are not ready yet as a world to move past nationalism.
