We have a huge stockpile of landmines that we built up to drop all over Germany if the Soviets invaded. We regularly drop temporary mines from aircraft which deactivate on their own after a short period (on the order of days).

In the Border War in Angola and South-West Africa, there were a few cases where the Soth Africans put up signs saying "Danger: Mines" around a field with no actual mines, to great effect.
