I found out today the landing area chosen by NASA was boulder strewn so Armstrong had to find somewhere to land coming down. He spotted a clear spot and manouevred the module like the way he had helicopters in Korea. They only had 17 seconds of fuel left when they landed. That was all they had to get back off the moon.
