But I'm not going to until one or the other of you decide to actually writing something more concrete about why you support the barrage other than 'Cuz I fink it's a good idea'...

I've given you all the info in the last few posts, work it out for yourself...

You haven't actually given us any information. You've given us a few simple generalisations and alluded that there might be information that supports your decision not to have an opinion other than the fact that you don't like the barrage. Then said you haven't bothered to evaluate it to see if the barrage is the best option or not, but you wan't someone to, and you've refused to define any criteria by which you would even start to judge whether it is the best criteria or not.

      I mean take this:

maximising total energy production and overall economic benefits where possible, whilst minimising cost and negative environmental and economic effects
Who would disagree with that? Doesn't tell you anything. I'd like it to be really cheap, not hurt any birdies, knock 20 minutes off my journey to work from Reading to Henley and generate five hundred and sixty gazillawatts too.

So what you've told us so far is that it might be the best option, but you don't really know because you don't want to be the one who looks at the options and makes a choice?

This comparison suggests there are only two comparable in scale in terms of energy generation, one is a general plan which is completely uncosted and the other would be somewhere between cheaper and more expensive and is still opposed by some groups and is much bigger in scale - and wouldn't involve the transport benefits. Which it's disingenuous to describe as benefiting few thousand people.

Will the temptation of vast amounts of clean, tidal energy lead us to ignore the chance of serious environmental damage? Mark Anslow and Peter Clark report

This is my favourite one of Moby's responses. It's in response to the issue of flood prevention.

        .

It sounds reasonable. Until you see he's proposing the Shoots barrage. Which is further upstream, and therefore makes the downstream issues apply to even more people.

Incidentally, seeing as I live nearly 100 metres above see level my "I'm all right, Jack" senses remain pretty relaxed with both options.

Actually there's a third option which is even better than building the Severn barrage and the Shoots barrage.

It's building both of them. The big one first, obviously. But definitely building both. Give my apologies to the wading birds.

Or we could buy 7200 Challenger tanks and invade France through the tunnel in a sneak attack.

The French have 407 Leclerc Battle Tanks and we've already got cables under the channel to deliver us nuclear power

P.S Singapore seem to be sitting on a lot of decent tanks for such a small country. Hell, they've twice the number than Malaysia and of far better quality. Mongolia also seems to have more tanks than people (I exaggerate only modestly).

Not at all. I genuinely do want to live on an island while all the neighbouring bits at sea level (ie- much of Cardiff, Newport and Bristol) end up underwater.

That wasn't serious, by the way. I really don't believe the Severn barrage would pose any greater danger of flooding than other barrages such as the Thames barrage do.

When you get to the "Oooooo, we can't afford it!" part, please start your argument by going "We cannot afford the barrages (which should eventually make profit) while simultaneously replacing Trident (which won't) because.....".
