I payed over 3 $ per sq ft for a terrible place in Brussels (not in a nice area of the city). Six is crazy.

Why would one choose to live in Brussels ?

            I got a job here.

Other parts of Belgium seem nicer.

Well, if you don't move to Charleroi or Nivelles you have a point...

Several people in the group (2+ students, 1+ postdoc, at least one professor) actually live outside of the city. Some quite far away (one in Leige, one even further).

Only speaking english, having a short contract (2 years, but I won't stay for the full time), and needing to be at work often, I haven't felt like I could really search for housing away from Brussels.

In Flanders everybody speaks English. Make your pick and use public transportation. Enjoy life a bit...
