Saw this post on a Madden forum and it so reminded me of how you guys are about Civ:

Many of us who have been hardcore Madden fans since the early 90's ('93 was my first Madden) and before have come to realize that next-gen has been the era of the Madden Dark Ages. Madden used to be progressive and fun, building each year on the prior entry into the franchise (franchise mode, hit stick, line shifts, lead passing, graphics, gameplay, QB scrambling, etc.). They weren't perfect, mind you, but every year topped the last, with '05 being Madden's pinnacle in my eyes. Lately, it has been about gimmicks and laziness, and each year really isn't much better or worse than the last. It has gotten more bearable the last couple years, however, but not by much.


It's like we had (or really, we SHOULD have now) steak and potatoes (last-gen Madden), but that had degraded into a turd (Madden next-gen '06-'11) and lately, it's been mostly gaseous fumes that aren't as bad as the turds (Madden '12), but still a far cry from what we want to deal with. So, yeah, I'd much rather deal with just odor rather than odor AND a hot, steaming log.

Imagine if Madden '12 had taken away the ability to pass the football, made multiplayer almost unplayable, and at the same time forgotten to take out passing plays from the AI's playbook. Then you would have a better analog.

I thought the in game graphics were terrible. I understand the new physics engine probably leaves less room for detail but I felt like I was playing Madden 2001 on a low end family PC (which I did back in the day).

I've seen it with StarCraft, with Diablo (though Diablo 3 does have definite flaws), with the Total War series, etc. People are crazy when it comes to their game series they played for years. The newest iteration is terrible compared to their memories of the old games.
