But with the precondition law, I don't see a reason for you to get insurance until you need it. For above-average health individuals (notably young people who are the ones who typically won't have insurance), the expected utility from insurance is less than the premiums and with a penalty tax substantially less than the premiums, it's conceivable that again the rational action would be to pay the fine and forgo insurance.

Yes, it's conceivable. I think we can be confident that when they decided on a fine, they thought about the possibility of people choosing to pay it.

Watching how some Republicans have turned on Justice Roberts has been almost scary. I mean, I've never been a fan of the guy by any means but some folks are acting like he just screwed their wife and shot their pet dog.

The tax is constitutional. Roberts was doing his job. Policy is not his responsibility and this law makes bad policy, even if it is legal.

It's also been funny seeing conservatives declare they'll move to Canada because of the evil health insurance which will cover them when they are sick. I guess they haven't heard Canada has the truly evil universal health insurance.
