  • Intro to Human Communication

One of the stupid summer classes I'm taking to up my GPA and fulfill gen ed requirements is a speech class. Yesterday, each student in the class gave a five minute informative speech about a topic of their choosing. In chronological order, I will now detail the speeches given.

    1. HIV. The first speaker discussed HIV for five minutes without once mentioning AIDS. She said that the reason HIV is so bad is because it gets into your system and it's like 20 vs. 10 and the white blood cells don't stand a chance and then you die.

    2. Battery life. This speaker discussed ways of improving the battery life of your phone. He began the speech by talking about how angry he gets whenever someone calls him on his cell phone, because he knows it's going to drain the battery life. To demonstrate how angry he gets, he threw his phone across the room and shattered it.

    3. Teen suicide. Apparently, it's bad. And also possibly the fault of parents who don't notice the warning signs.

    4. Advertisers. Advertisers are bad because they want to get rich by making you buy things, and whenever you see an advertisement, it's because an advertiser is trying to take your money.

    5. Violins. This student brought our her violin as a visual aid and discussed the history of violins since the 9th century. This was actually pretty interesting.

    6. Tobacco. Tobacco is bad because it's the most powerful neurotransmitter that the government since the 1950s in your body. Also, nicotine is one of the effects of tobacco.

    7. Voyager 1. It's leaving the Solar System soon. Pretty rad. Less rad is that the speaker said interstellar space, which Voyager 1 will soon be entering, is the space between galaxies in the universe.

    8. Making Money From Blogs. Blogs are places where people write things about their lives and you have to make it interesting and one of the most important things is you have to be a good writer.

    9. E-commerce. E-commerce is awesome because of how awesome the customer service is.

    10. Helen Keller. The first slide in this person's presentation was a motivational poster describing Helen Keller as the world hide and seek champion from 1942-1944. You can google the image if you want. The rest of the speech was about how there's more to her than the jokes, and this was somewhat interesting.

    11. Aggressive Driving. This speaker wanted us to know that aggressive driving is bad because when you drive aggressively you can die and because it makes people angry.

    12. Dangers of Cell Phones. This speaker put up a diagram of the EM spectrum which happened to be divided into ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, with cell phone's radio signals planted squarely in the non-ionizing section. Then he talked about how radiation is bad for you and can cause cancer. Then he showed an infrared picture of someone's head after talking on a cell phone for 15 minutes, and told us that was what the radiation was doing to your brain. He also mentioned that his brother died of a brain tumor caused by cell phones.

At this point the professor brought up the fact that persuasive speeches are next week, and today we're just doing informative speeches.

    13. Caffeine. Caffeine is bad for you because one time I had a cappuccino and then I had to go to the ER.

    14. Nuclear Power. Nuclear Power is fission which is where uranium gets turned into energy. Her PowerPoint slide showed a picture of two hydrogen atoms smashing together, forming helium, and releasing radiation. Nuclear Power is also bad because it creates plutonium and plutonium can make nuclear bombs.

    15. Meteors. This was my presentation. I discussed the threat posed by meteors, the terrible science in Armageddon, and the actual methods scientists have come up with to deal with meteors. This was way too much material for five minutes, however, and there were things I left out and things I forgot. Oops.

    16. Children and TV. This person spoke about the... effects... maybe... of TV on children? She was too quiet to understand.

    17. Putting exercise into your daily routine. You can walk upstairs. You can walk downstairs. You can walk your dog. You can drive to the metro and then walk home from the metro. You can take the stairs at work instead of the elevator. You can... oh that's four minutes? That is my presentation about putting exercise into your daily routine thank you.

Is this the kind of schooling you go through after getting caught DUI or speeding and to get your license back you have to prove you're not entirely imbecile?

Although I'd guess some of those wouldn't be allowed to drive again, not by me.

It is obvious that a lot of those students are in dire need of this course.

It's a speaking class, and Lori heard and remembered a good deal of what the majority of them said. That what they said was misguided and silly is beyond the scope of the class.

I aced my community college speech class, surprisingly, and a lot of my classmates were actually pretty good. I remember one discussed FGM, another who was a dwarf/little person discussed her condition, and one girl gave a strong presentation on why heroin will turn you into a gigantic raging dickburger.

Well, I'm taking this course because I have a .5 GPA at my community college and need to bring it up to 1.75 before I'm allowed to take a full course load, so maybe?

I wrote down what the other students talked about while they were giving their speeches because I'm an ******* who feels a need to privately make fun of people who are beneath me.

My favorite GPA padding courses were
Fantasy in Literature. The entire course was a discussion of the Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy. An easy A
Science Fiction in Literature. I had read every book used previously. Jose Phillip Farmer was a guest speaker. An even easier A.
Russian History in the Movies. Watched classic old Russian movies once a week in a Pot filled auditorium. It was easy to outperform all the pot heads. An easy A.

Easy to make fun of, but here's what's true:

                    1) The majority of instances in an ordinary person's life that call for them to speak in public will be dedicated to things that are either obvious, trite, or stupifyingly dull (frequently accompanied by PowerPoint slides); and

                    2) Good public speaking skills are shockingly rare.

Good for you and all those kids for taking the class; I hope you all learn something.

It's true; I certainly won't claim to have them. I think I'm okay with the speaking part. I think I'm loud enough, clear enough, and all that jazz. But I completely lose track of the rest of my body - where I'm going, what nonsensical gestures my hands are making, where I'm looking. Amusingly, that's kind of what happens in my writing, too. Conversations in my stories are more or less two dismembered mouths talking at each other in a featureless room.

I took this course shortly after I was born.

That explains why you don't remember much about it.
