In Grand Theft Auto IV Niko Bellic claims that the prison rape thing is a "purely American phenomenon." Not knowing anything about being in prison myself and being moderately distrustful of things that appear in Rockstar games, can anyone who has done time across the pond confirm or deny this for me?

(MM) Rape is really common in war torn areas of Africa. I am not sure how common it was in western civ war areas, I don't really think it was. It wasn't like the entire south was emasculated after the civil war due to being anally raped.

Basically it seems to be common wherever rule of law breaks down and where MM rape is viewed as something that emasculates and punishes the victim and not the perpetrator.

And gay men don't like being raped just like straight women don't like being raped (obviously). Rape has little to do with sex period, and I think the rape that goes on in prisons/war areas/etc is the least likely to have to do with sex. In fact, in the populations where there is lots of MM rape are often homophobic but don't really consider the one penetrating to be engaging in homosexuality.

It is more of a violence, dominance, emasculation, punishment/etc, sort of thing.

MM Rape was common in South Africa jails during apartheid. I was actually surprised how things seemed similar to american jails (not talking about the racial things, but the bad experiences).
