In a desparate effort to keep this Off-Topic thread On-Topic by staying away from On-Topic comments. Only in Apolyton does this make sense.

.1 c isn't bad. That only increases your mass by about .5%. To increase your mass by 10%, for example, you need to be traveling at ~.42 c. You don't even double your mass until ~.87 c.

I know next to nothing, but wouldn't increasing your mass also increase the energy potential in your fuel? Why would it be a large issue?

                    Who?

                    The expansion's Rihanna is Trinidadian.

Datatech Sinder Roze was born Asa Wright in Trinidad, West Indies Co-Prosperity Sphere, and enjoyed an unexceptional and stable childhood, raised by two professors at the fledgling University of Trinidad.
If we're counting the expansion leaders, then Svensgaard (Pirates) is American from Gloucester, Massachusetts. US Navy officer.

I don't know if the Pirates are another far right-wing characterization of Americans since I've never played the expansion.

No, because (and I could be completely wrong here) the apparent relativistic mass of your spacehsip only increases as far as outside observers are concerned. Within the frame of reference of the space ship, everything remains the same.

Hmmm... Reading Doc's Good News, Bad News thread got me to thinking of this thread I started about a year ago. After re-reading it, I wonder why I let it die. Just skip the SMAC/X talk and it's a pretty good discussion.

Have any of you seen the Science Channels speculation into this subject, Evacuate the Earth? If you can successfully ingnore the complete inplausibilty for the reason the Earth needs to be evacuated, it's a very good documentary. If you have an hour 1/2 you want to kill, it's very good (I watched it on DVR with my father. It took us 3 hours to watch because we were constantly pausing it to discuss the ramifications of the things on the show).

Right now, I'm fixated on how to get material to space cheaply. The more I think about it, the more I think the future of the space industry is not in reusable space planes, but in Linear Accelerators. Aside from the cost to research and built one, I can't think of a cheaper or better way to get to space. Any of you science guys know of some reason, other than money, why this would not be viable?

even if an asteroid hit, it would be easier to survive underground than in space

Well, that actually points to the inplausibility of the docu I posted. The reason they give for evacuating Earth is a wandering Neutron star destroys the solar system. This is why I say try to ignore the reason for the evacuation and just focus of the evacuation.

Sorry, just skimmed. Dealing with random bull**** around the house today.

The reason for the evacuation seems relevant though. Most phenomena I can think of that would be cause for evacuation would most likely be something we cannot escape with our primitive propulsion systems. The Voyager probe just reached the edge of the solar system. A neutron star or black hole or anything that would threaten the system would take us with it.

And if we're going to pretend we have warp speed and ****, then the logistics of the evacuation would be much easier... considering the overall level of technological advancement.

It's also about the sheer scale of the economy. If we figure out warp speed, it's likely we will be smart enough to prevent the catastrophe... or perhaps even move the entire planet out of harm's way.
To us, it is the BEAST.

Warp speed is about building an interstellar empire, not evacuation.
