White American Indian charged with hate crime

All the shooting victims are black. Police have identified Watts and England as white, though the probable cause affidavit released Friday noted England was a co-owner of a truck that had Cherokee Nation license plates.

Ah the hypocrisy of race politics in America with regards to who gets to be a minority. With all the oppression American Indians have faced, I'm sure they would have loved this white status two hundred years ago.

Natives are one of the few ethnic groups that get separated out here. It's not White vs Black vs Latino so much as Native vs Everyone Else.

I mean police departments and the Justice Department have considered Asians, Latinos, American Indians, etc. as white for racial classification purposes for decades but now are we seeing the 'white-ization' of all non-Black minorities in the mainstream?

I see it as two contrasting forces:

1. It is too difficult to divide people into distinct racial "buckets" in a scientific way, so you see institutions "giving up" on distinguishing half-Cuban half-Anglo-Saxon people from fully-Anglo-Saxon people, for example.

2. The left's standard doctrine about marginalization, as they define it, unquestionably still applies to Black Americans. People who believe in actively working against such marginalization have to recognize some sort of standard of "Black-ness" in order to do that.

We end up with a weird compromise between (1) and (2), where we recognize "Black-ness" as being a legitimate concept while simultaneously rejecting that same sort of logic for other races.

Playing whack-a-mole with cultural prejudices is very difficult, and it unsurprisingly ends up with some weird results - but not completely inexplicable ones.

Well we eradicated 95% of the Native American population, which was nearly 10 million in the area of the continental US in 1700 but only about 1/2 million by 1900. Particularily here in the east many tribes had no official reservation, so it's wasy to see that such smal numbers would be rapidly diluted by intermarriage. In this part of Virginia the Monacans were the local indian tribe, but they weren't granted a reservation. Only a decade ago did a group form that's trying to preserve their heritage. There are no pure blooded Monacans left, many of them are blond.

Yeah but this guy's from Oklahoma... if you're ever going to find a real American Indian, it'll be in Oklahoma.

He's evidently mixed a bit but being mixed doesn't stop Obama from being Black.

He doesn't look mixed enough to be what would traditionally be characterized as white.
