  • Apparently pregnancy starts before conception now..

Yeah you guessed it, it was the Arizona GOP

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1415715.html

It goes something like this apparently.. They've now lowered the time you can have an abortion to 18 weeks. Because that doesn't stop enough women having abortions, they've decided that rather than the normal rough calculation of the date of conception, instead they've defined pregnancy as "calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period of the pregnant woman".

That's right, to cut the time a woman has to make a decision about abortion (or even find out she's pregnant) they've made it the law that you can be pregnant before you've even had sex.

..and people in America wonder why the rest of the world thinks you've gone bat**** crazy..

And I thought the GOP didn't want anyone to get between you and your doctor. I guess not.

When the hell did you get that idea?
          John Brown did nothing wrong.

The antics of the crazy religious right have national relevance.

Whilst amusing, I don't see why defining an accurately measurable date for a legal time limit is a bad thing.

It's not that they are defining it insomuch as how they're defining it. You're pregnant until you're pregnant. It's pretty amazing. The only time you're not pregnant is when you are menstruating or are menopausal.

Sure, it's amusing, but....I don't know how the rough date of conception is calculated; I got the impression from kentonio's post that this would be a more accurate yardstick. I assume that's not the reason, but it could be the excuse.

Seems Arizona is as "backwards" as the UK, unless the definition has changed in the last 8 years:

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

In the UK pregnancy is calculated from the first day of the woman's last period so for as much as three weeks of this first month she might not be actually pregnant.

What they're saying, is that a woman is pregnant before she gets pregnant.

                          That's what they claimed anyway.

How the hell is this going to be enforced anyways? Do they go rooting through the trash to find, DNA test, and carbon date maxi pads? If a woman claims she never had her period and it's not possible to prove she did have one, is she thus legally not pregnant throughout the entire pregnancy?

Could you book an abortion, during a menstrual period, preemptively in the event of a pregnancy, by the same token?
