Both the American built BMWs and Mercedes are higher in quality than the European built versions. Toyota exports American made Toyotas to Japan because they're cheaper to build here due to the exchange rate and the quality is still excellent. BTW in general the only country which regularly gets rated as having worse quality than European brands in Korea with American brands having higher quality and Japanese having the highest quality.

I know that mondeo is a good car - my current is a such. Though, it's a bit smallish, only 115 HP. That cutie in the link has 220 .
It's main fault is that it cost ~35kUSD.
Yeah, 115 would be slow in a car of that size, 220 would be far better. Mine is about the same power as that but much lighter. At last I can get my revenge on the 3-series driving arseholes

This is all a moot point with American-designed cars, because any amount of engineering is just polishing a turd.
Take America's most iconic performance car, the Corvette. It's got leaf-spring suspension. That was considered cutting-edge technology in the first half of the 19th century, but I think you really want a better solution on any vehicle not pulled by a horse.

They haven't had leaf springs since the early 80's. I agree though that up until the early 90's the big three took a "meh, they won't notice the difference so go the cheapest route" attitude. BTW tons of Japanese and European cars get designed here plus, as I said, over the last 20 years the big three have got more serious about not just doing what ever is cheapest. None of this changes the fact that most mass market European brands usually suck at quality and break left and right; the big exceptions are the premium brands but even the premium brands break more compared to US or Japanese premium brands if the ratings companies are to be believed.
That said, I wouldn't trade my BMW for a Caddy or a Lincoln. The designs are simply aimed at different market segments.
uh....Corvette still has leaf springs. They changed from steel to composite during the 80s, but they are still leaf springs.
