Lots of people joined when Civ5 came out. Sadly, they quickly learned the game sucked and left.

I actually was playing it on the flight, it wasn't bad.

I wasn't here when Civ5 came out, but I have to agree. Although, civ5 isn't as horrible as it used to be. I still can't get myself to play more than one game, but I have been able to force myself to play it. Civ5 almost kinda seems fun when you force yourself to play it to justify spending $50 on it.
