Is there something bothering you? Want to talk about it?“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

We've had electrical problems in the plant which have stalled production for the past...nine hours now. I have orders going to Germany and China going out on the ninth, but even with this we should make it. Really annoying, though. The equipment is nearly thirty years old now and it keeps throwing faults. Yesterday I was told they found two safties in the electrical cabinet had been bypassed. ****ing 480V and they bypass them! Naturally nobody will own up to it. Somebody keeps shutting off the cooling to the cabinets, too, because we use pneumatic coolers and they don't like the sound they make. The price of oil just jacked up the price of our main raw, and I've been ordered to double our order before the increase hits, but we have no place to put it -- literally nowhere suitable. I'm thinking of leasing a trailer or a container, but that might eat up any savings we'd see from the double order. The warehouse we lease space from won't take it, they actually want to reduce their space, and I'm starting to wonder if the damaged pallets we're seeing over there now aren't just accidents. It wouldn't be that bad, except one of our major customers just pushed back all their orders by a month because they discovered they accumulated a four week supply of our product without noticing. By coincidence, that's exactly how much of that product was just made for them, and now it has nowhere to go for another month. We just changed to a new database system, and it's a nightmare, no real front end at all. The fortruck's only three years old, and it's a complete mess. There no actual cable between the floor pedals and the throttle and brakes, its all electronic, and the computer's throwing fault codes early and often. The hydraulic lines are leaking. I thought Toyota was supposed to be better than this.
I've been here for fifteen hours now. I need a nap.No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Sounds like a cluster****. Hope you can work it out. Don't be afraid to knock some heads.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

Another typical day in the world of ops. Fire drills 'r' us.
So glad I'm no longer doing plant management. Good Luck MM.
But seriously at this point it is often a human error trap. Make sure you always get perspective and ensure core safety principles are not compromised. Rethink some fundamentals to the point of who is and who is not allowed access to your panels. Process/Change management procedures etc. 480V is not to be trifled with.
If all the other things go wrong you get yelled at , who cares. If someone gets fried you get canned and/or held to some degree of liability (As I am sure you are well aware).Last edited by Ogie Oglethorpe; March 2, 2012, 11:55."Just puttin on the foil" - Jeff Hanson
