They didn't send us home early either, but a bunch of kids were picked up by their parents, so we knew something was up.

How far was your school from the Pentagon?

A decent ways out, well outside the beltway. Kuci's school was close enough that they evacuated, I think? It's right next to Dulles Airport. Thomas Jefferson, which Kuci wasn't attending yet, was close enough that you could hear the blast and the windows rattled, apparently.

They sent us home early when 9/11 happened. The moment it happened, our teachers told us and we watched the news in class until the school district made the early dismissal decision.

I was in high school, though.

I was 11. We heard bits and pieces about it in our classroom during the day as events unfolded. The teacher in the room next tous, whom I had had the previous year in fifth grade went into hysterics. The principle drove her home and our teacher had to share monitroing her class. I came home from school and asked my Mom if she had heard about it. She accused me of lying and went to the bathroom to get some soap to wash my mouth out. I ran over to the TV and turned it on and there was a tearful Walter Cronkite repeating the official pronouncment, then announcing that the man arrested had himself been shot in the police station. The station then cut over to Lyndon Johnson being sworn in on the steps fo Air Force 1. Mom stood there with her mouth open, then dropped the soap and staggered. I helped her onto the couch, where she lay down, looked at the ceiling and muttered "Why what is this world coming to? What does it mean?"

People did stupid things back then.

Another was making a kid eat chili peppers because they cursed or something.

Alby, I don't trust your observations on social norms one bit.

Don't take it from me. Dr. Strangelove just told you. There was a time when shoving soap in a child's mouth was considered 'parenting'.

                    It's child abuse now.

It's just soap. Kind of silly but it would take an awful lot of soap to put a kid in danger.

A Palm Bay woman and her boyfriend were arrested Monday for child abuse after the couple went old school to punish their 8-year-old daughter for swearing.

                        ...

Police claim Adriyanna Herdener and Wilfredo Rivera went too far by placing a bar of soap in the girl's mouth and letting it stay for 10 minutes. Herdener did not intervene in the discipline.

The girl eventually vomited and Rivera took her to the local hospital, where hospital staff called police.

Like I said in the post she thought I was making the whole thing up. I rushed to turn on the TV because I figured that news of the event would pre-empt regular programming for the rest of the day and I was correct.

That was obviously overdoing it. My mom used a bit of dishwashing liquid on her finger -- it was more than enough.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

So, uh, she put dishwashing liquid on her finger then she put her finger in your mouth?
IMHO the only part of a parent's body that belongs in a child's mouth is mother's milk-laden teets. I think what you're describing could be construed as child-molestation, particularily if the finger is pushed inward and outward repeatedly in a rhythmic manner.
