Even The Monkees never really understood what they were doing in HEAD. It was all Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson.

...and it makes a lot more sense when you remember that.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

This may not be the smartest thing to post, but I actually don't know who the monkees are...

That was true at the start, but they worked hard and were all true musicians at the end.

            Here, buy this.

            I owned that in 1977.

            When I was ten.

Saw the original series when I was about 7 years old. RIP

Bugs, I had actually assembled a lengthy post this afternoon -- detailing the genesis of The Monkees, their lack of involvement (other than lead vocals) in the first two albums, who actually wrote the songs, etc. But I figured you were well aware that they were the result of a casting call for a TV show. Basically, the idea was inspited by A Hard Day's Night. Fun fact: producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider actually planned to cast hippie band the Lovin' Spoonful, but it didn't work out due to recording contracts. Thus the casting call. Sadly, only a couple of them (Tork, Nesmith) were actual musicians.

Sure, the band revolted from the semi-iron fist of Don Kirshner (the man behind the curtain) and soon insisted on being involved in the musical and creative process (this was almost all driven by Nesmith). But that material did not meet the same success as their first two albums of Prefab Four stuff, written mostly by Tommy Boyce/Bobby Hart and Goffin/King.

Their TV show lasted two years, their effective musical career a bit longer. Which was about right. Don't get me wrong, I was, and am, a Monkees fan. But their true legacy is - and should be - as the first true music video-driven band, and as fairly brilliant comic actors.

Musically, The Monkees' own material never measured up. Comparing their slender catalog of songs to the career arc of the Beatles is pretty laughable. it's no coincidence that their Headquarters album (the first one on which the group actually wrote and played most of the material) had its one-week run at the top of the charts ended by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Boyce and Hart wrote most of the music for the Monkees. The Monkees were nice guys. Entertaining. They were certainly not the Beatles.

I wouldn't be able to argue with you in the slightest if I simply equated commercial success with artistic merit. Unfortunately I don't.

It's probably no coincidence that I think their self-penned material is better than the earlier tracks they bought in. Like this one-
