This time around, the Census is once again equating "family" with "household." Translation: you don't count as a stepfamily unless the child in question lives with you "most of the time." If your step/child lives with you 50% of the time or less, you're not a "real" stepfamily.
This, of course, is a perfectly reasonable definition of whether a child with two parents has a "step-parent" but the article is throwing a hissy fit.

Seriously. Where I grew up (an hour's drive from Philly, FWIW) it was rare to meet anyone whose parents were divorced.

Thank you. I see I'm going to have to read the whole thing to find it.

            B ****ing S.

It's rare to find anyone whose biological parents are married! All of you are out of touch with America.

Why do you think Santorum is going on and on about families? It's because that type of family is dead in America.

Okay according to him, using 1980-84 data, cumulative proportion of children (up to age 18) ever in a step-family:
              Total: 23%
              Non-Hispanic White: 21%
              Black: 27%

              Marriage or cohabitation:
              Total: 30%
              Non-Hispanic White: 27%
              Black: 40%

              Data from 1980-1984.

I realize that gribbler's 'moment in time' crap under-represents the transient quality of marriage in America.

You are, by far, the most insular person I've ever met. Hey, my parents are still married - I must be out of touch!

And the reason Santorum goes on about families is because he's uber-conservative jerkwad who think gays marrying is going to ruin everything.

Same here, though out of six children in my father's family, four have been divorced.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
