Harshness and stridency can be taken to the point where it becomes counterproductive. I think telling another person "you are the scum of the earth for thinking such a thing" is likely to create so much antagonism that it ends all communication and hardens attitudes, rather than softening attitudes. Trading insults changes nothing and creates a fresh conflict arising from those insults.
