  • Fallen Marine's Final Letter

"My death did not change the world; it may be tough for you to justify its meaning at all. But there is a greater meaning to it. Perhaps I did not change the world. Perhaps there is still injustice in the world. But there will be a child who will live because men left the security they enjoyed in their home country to come to his.

“And this child will learn in the new schools that have been built. He will walk his streets not worried about whether or not his leader's henchmen are going to come and kidnap him. He will grow into a fine man who will pursue every opportunity his heart could desire.

“He will have the gift of freedom, which I have enjoyed for so long. If my life buys the safety of a child who will one day change this world, then I know that it was all worth it.”
Sgt. William Stacey was on foot patrol in Afghanistan when an enemy bomb went off, killing the 23-year-old.

That's really impressive. I'm sure I'd make a lot more typos if I'd been blown up.

It's a fine sentiment Al, but you should should know by now how it would be received around here.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

It reminds me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail where the dying man took the time to chisel "Ahhhhh" into the rock.

I'm just shocked they allowed a dog into the marines, but considering his literacy, why the hell not?

If it has any sentiment at all, it's grotesque irony. Everyone knowledgeable says Afghanistan is going to fall apart the moment we leave. That boy isn't going to grow up in a free society, he's going to get all that Western Crusader nonsense beat out of him by his tribal elders six months to a year after we leave. Then they'll burn down his school, murdering any and all of his female classmates for being whores who wore revealing uniforms, and send him to work the poppy fields.

So, that letter shouldn't be making your heart swell with patriotic pride, or whatever it makes you feel. You should be just a little bit angry. Because that guy, who seems to be a decent, idealistic young man, is not coming home to that lady and that dog. He got blown to bits on an asinine mission to try and shoot and bomb our values into foreigners who never wanted them, an operation begun in ignorant hubris and continued for ten years just to save face. And we know it isn't going to work. We're going to pull out, and the whole country's going to go the way of Saigon forty years before it, and that brave, hopeful young man will have died accomplishing 1. Jack and 2. ****.
