  • Study links low intelligence with right-wing beliefs

Researchers have found a possible explanation for why certain people are prejudiced: they’re less intelligent.

Children with lower general intelligence are more likely to become prejudiced as adults, according to a Brock University study.

The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, examined data from two large-scale British studies, and found lower intelligence scores in childhood were predictors of greater racism in adulthood, which the researchers controversially explain is brought about by adopting right-wing ideologies.

A secondary analysis of data from a U.S. study also showed those with poor abstract-reasoning skills were more likely to have anti-homosexual prejudice, partially linked to authoritarian attitudes.

Lead researcher Gordon Hodson told LiveScience that the results of the study indicate a vicious cycle, in which people with low intelligence are drawn to socially conservative ideologies. In turn, those ideologies can contribute to prejudices.

“Socially conservative ideologies tend to offer structure and order,” he said, explaining why those with lower intelligence may gravitate toward the right. “Unfortunately, many of these features can contribute to prejudice.”

The researchers found that people with lower intelligence also tended to have less contact with other races and groups, which, Dr. Hodson said, supports previous research that determined interacting with other groups is mentally challenging and cognitively draining.

Dr. Hodson explained the findings do not mean all liberals are smart and all conservatives are stupid, LiveScience.com reports. “There are multiple examples of very bright conservatives and not-so-bright liberals, and many examples of very principled conservatives and very intolerant liberals,” he said.

Previous research has suggested that the brains of conservatives and liberals are wired differently.
A secondary analysis of data from a U.S. study also showed those with poor abstract-reasoning skills were more likely to have anti-homosexual prejudice, partially linked to authoritarian attitudes.

    Explains a lot!

    1) Don't equate "right wing beliefs" with prejudice. You're denying that there are perfectly legitimate reasons for holding conservative viewpoints and that broadly speaking, it is those reasons and not prejudice that lead people to vote the way they do.
    2) Don't make the mistake of assuming that it is right wingers who are prejudiced but NOT left-wingers
    3) I have seen a study from George Mason University linking poor understanding of economics with left-wing views. These things work both ways.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this is a crappy troll.

Quite true. Left wingers are insanely prejudiced against rightwingers and other non belivers.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Actually I've seen a lot of left-wing prejudice against people who live in rural areas, people who believe in God, and people who are wealthier than they are.

I'm not saying prejudice doesn't exist among the political right as well, but don't pretend that it's exclusively there.

Gribbler's own little touch there is to equate racism, homophobia etc with "right-wing" beliefs. Balderdash. Communists were perfectly adept at slaughtering racial and dare I say it, "sexual" ("gendered"?) enemies of the "worker's revolution" when it suited their interests.

It is the Democrats, incidentally, who supported the appointment of a Wise Latina Shaman onto the Supreme Court. It is the "enlightened" "liberals" who tolerate Sharpton's presence at MSNBC. It is the Democrat's very own Tom Friedman who wished that the United States could be "China" for a day, led by a one party Democrat state, so that "reasonably enlightened" experts could bypass democracy and just "get things done." It is the Democrat Jesse Jackson Jr who depicted Congress as being "in rebellion" and called for Obama to bypass democracy to get things done. It is Beverly Perdue, a Democrat, who called for a suspension of Congressional elections so that things could "get done." This is just the beginning, bucko. Don't start playing the authoritarian game. Calling on people to obey "the experts," destroy democracy and divide people into racially entitled tribes are just a few of the wondrous examples of enlightened, classical liberalism among Democrats today. I'm not saying every Democrat everywhere hews to such nonsense but don't start trolling about how prejudice and authoritarianism are somehow inherently right-wing.

Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

"My own little touch"? Balderdash, I was only quoting the article.

Does the study define what it means by "right-wing ideology?" If it's a Brit study it might well refer to something entirely different from what we know on this side of the pond. Even here, "right-wing" is vague, encompassing a whole range of beliefs (libertarian? hard theocrat? softer social conservative? hardcore capitalist?)--and what we call economically "conservative" over here is actually a "liberal" there.

Yes, I don't think adherents of "classical liberalism" have anything to do with racism or homophobia although they are generally considered right-wing.

I mean, it sounds like they're using "right-wing beliefs" to mean specifically "nationalistic xenophobia" and deliberately leaving it vague.

Kind of like "people with left-wing beliefs" ran over those Chinese protesters with tanks.

One does not. Some things defy explanation.
