  • The Falklands, does Argentina have a valid p.o.v.?

The Argentinians seem to be getting their knickers in a knot following the discovery of a bit of oil near the Falklands.

Do you think there is any validity to Argentinian claims to the Falklands?

I think their claims are absurd. Falklands have been settled by british people for nearly 200 years. The population is virtually all british and wish to remain a british territory.

IF that is the case, then no.

No. It's something that gets trundled out to appease the general population and make Argentinian politicians popular. I'd see the war in 1982 as being a major blunder if they were attempting to win over the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands.

They should've cleansed the population when they had a chance. This always works.

Certainly worked with Argentina's own population during the Dirty War. Perhaps the Falklands could be 'returned' to the Argentinians when they return parts of Argentina to the original indigenous inhabitants.

The few that are left of course....

I've thought that the Dirty War was USA-sponsored anti-Socialist state terror. Do you have a link to where I could read about your part of the picture?

Why don't you at least read the English wikipedia articles on the issue?

The British claim to de jure sovereignty dates from 1690, and the United Kingdom has exercised de facto sovereignty over the archipelago almost constantly since 1833. Argentina has long disputed this claim, having been in control of the islands for a brief period prior to 1833. The dispute escalated in 1982, when Argentina invaded the islands, precipitating the Falklands War.

Contemporary Falkland Islanders consider themselves to be British. They gained full British citizenship with the British Nationality (Falkland Islands) Act 1983, after the Falklands War. Argentina argues that the islanders do not have the right to self-determination, arguing that they are not aboriginal and were brought to replace the Argentine population that Argentina claims was expelled after the re-establishment of British rule in 1833.[2] The United Nations have called on both countries to begin dialogue over the sovereignty claim.[3]

The war ****ed everything up. If it wasn't for it, the islands would probably already be a part of argentina.

I thought the island was inhabited by pirates in 1832 before the British took over?

Look at it this way, the inhabitants of the Falklands have no more right to self determination than do the Palestinians, the Abkhazians or the South Ossetians.
