a small govt, if efficient, can still stop them from doing what they want

and from the politicians' pov, a small govt doesn't bring with it lots of perks... like the revolving door of public/private sector... getting all your peeps cushy appointed positions

yeah, but those are all things are big govt policies
most of the base likes those and only ron paul wingnuts are ideologically consistent on such issues
i'd say a majority of republican electorate is surprisingly pragmatic
they just don't want to feel guilty about straying from their principles
so they just pretend like they aren't
