Early Christians were smart. Dec 25 in the Roman calender was Dies Natalis of Sol Invictus, ie "Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun". It was only natural to take that day over and change it for their own purposes (ie, Jesus is the light of the world). Also during the era of Christian persecution by the Roman Empire they could say they were celebrating the Unconquerable Sun while celebrating their own unconquerable light.Originally posted by DaShi View PostThe chosen date of Jesus' birth usurped a pagan celebration. When it's all said and done and the smoke clears, does it really matter? He could have been born September 8th and so what?Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

It is just fun to discuss. At least for me - I like talking about God (with the hope a seed is planted)

And to you as well, my dear friend.
And to all of the rest of the people on this site, whether they be believers or not, friends or not, known by me for a long time or not. If I have offended, please forgive me as I forgive all who have done so to me. May the day of the birth of our Savior be a joyful and spirit filled day. God bless.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. You're stuck spending Christmas inside Donkey Kong? That sucks, man, I'm sorry to hear that. But you should have known not to get so close to a barrel-chucking ape.Originally posted by Adagio View PostMerry Christmas, glædelig jul, frohe Weihnachten, feliz navidad

And the gift-giving and the Christmas feast too.Originally posted by molly bloom View PostHave a great Yuletide.
And don't forget, decking the tree is a pagan ritual meant to bring wisdom.
And the holly and the ivy ? Pagan too.
And the fairy lights... ? Yep, them too.
The mistletoe as well.
Anyway- happy sun return, and peace and goodwill to all, regardless of faith, creed or philosophy. I always say I'm an ecumenical atheist- I'll celebrate any holy day with food involved.
I bet real Christians like the Mennonites do not celebrate Christmas this way.Graffiti in a public toilet
