Republican mayor outed after spending taxpayer money at gay sex store in Toronto

A Mississippi mayor has been forced to come out of the closet after charging taxpayers for a purchase made at a gay sex store in Toronto.

Greg Davis, the Republican mayor of Southaven, Miss., is embroiled in a spending scandal after state auditors requested receipts for $170,000 (U.S.) in improper charges he made to the city.

According to The Commercial Appeal, a newspaper in Memphis, Tenn., the receipts include thousands of dollars in liquor and lavish dinners, as well as a $67 charge at a store called Priape, which bills itself as “Canada’s premiere gay lifestyle store and sex shop.”

Mr. Davis ran as a conservative, family values candidate in an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 2008. He has a wife of 19 years, Suzann, and three young daughters, who are all active members of Heartland Baptist Church, according to the city’s website.

“At this point in my life and in my career, while I have tried to maintain separation between my personal and public life, it is obvious that this can no longer remain the case,” Mr. Davis told the newspaper in an interview on Thursday afternoon from his Southaven home. “While I have performed my job as mayor, in my opinion, as a very conservative, progressive individual – and still continue to be a very conservative individual – I think that it is important that I discuss the struggles I have had over the last few years when I came to the realization that I am gay.”

The mayor’s office did not respond to requests for comment on Monday.

The Commercial Appealobtained the receipts through a Freedom of Information request. Mr. Davis told the newspaper he couldn’t recall what he bought at the sex store, and that he was in Toronto on a recruitment trip with Mid-South warehouse developers.

Southaven is the third-largest city in Mississippi, and Mr. Davis was first elected as its mayor in 1997.

He told the newspaper it’s too early to discuss whether he’ll step down, and that he’ll take time off over the holidays to be with his family.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

I imagine that's gonna be awkward. I would hide anything with a sharp edge.

So... Winnipeg had an openly gay mayor for a couple of terms. He lived with his partner and their foster son.

Did the Winnepeg mayor cheat on his wife of 19 years or waste thousands of tax dollars on his lover? I fail to see the analogy here.

In Canada you can be gay, have a partner & children and be elected.
In Canada you can be a Conservative Justice minister, bang you EA, get embroiled in a messy divorce after fathering a child out of wedlock, and be re-elected.
In Mississippi, you can have $170,000 (U.S.) in improper charges he made to the city, but the scandelous part is being gay.

In Portland, the mayor is also gay. Soin the US you can be gay and still elected mayor.

I admit your second example is sort of similar, but I bet you could find places in the US where the political party had enough power that personal issues would be ignored.

I think the scandalous part is being a conservative family values guy, then racking up 170k of improper charges for a secret gay lifestyle.

              It is different.

The article states $67 was spent at a gay 'lifestyle store and sex shop', not $170,000, unless you are suggesting that 'liquor and lavish dinners' is a gay lifestyle indicator... (that would explain so much around here!).

What was shocking to me is to learn that Southaven is the 3rd largest city in Mississippi. Having lived in Memphis for 3 years in the early and mid 90's, I didn't recall it as anything more than a suburb.

Apparently Southhaven is 4th according to Wikipedia and Olive Branch is 9th (though Olive Branch didn't seem all that big at all when I was there a few years back - I had an investigation I was doing in Byhalia and Olive Branch was the closest place with a decent hotel).
