That was the result of a couple decades of Civil Rights progress by the Dems, and Nixon's Southern Strategy in 1968. The Southern Democrats were disenfranchised by the shift of the bulk of the Democratic party to be progressive about Civil Rights, and Nixon scooped them up. That's how a century after Lincoln emancipated blacks, the GOP lost most of the black vote. (But cannily gained the powerful white racist vote.)Originally posted by Elkad View PostComment
