I always tuck my shirt in at work, Asher. It's been expected at all the places I've worked at.

That's because you guys are chumps.

I held a meeting with directors and VPs today in a t-shirt and hoody. No one cares. In fact, it lends a bit of geek cred which is what you want in my kind of position.

Never trust a tech guy who dresses well. In my experience, they are always the most inept.

(Mind you, it is a very nice hoody )

You're an idiot. T-shirts and a hoody. Wow.

It's not about looking like a slob because you can. It's about looking your best and looking like a ****ing professional.

Wearing a hoody doesn't make you look like a slob unless it's ill-fitting or in poor condition. It's practical because it's -20 outside and the indoor temperature fluctuates a lot since it's a LEED Gold building. Layers are common and intelligent.

Almost all of the technical people (read: the people who make the most money) wear similar attire. The only people who "dress up" at work are the lowly sales guys or the new-grad testers who think "looking like a professional" means something in the absence of skill. It doesn't.

People hire professionals for their capabilities and their brains, not for their outfits. Especially when there's zero chance of customer interaction. Hell, the wing I work in at work is inaccessible to 75% of the company as it's restricted.

            We're similar ages, right Alby?

You are about a facade and "looking like a professional." And what do you do and what do you make?

I'm about substance and dressing for utility. What do I do and what do I make (well, in general...)?

Now, which one of us is the idiot?

I worked at contractors in the Washington region, I imagine the business culture is a bit different than in Calgary.

Not as much as you think. Calgary is an old-school business town. Many places downtown still have people wearing suits.

The difference is I don't work for dinosaur companies. It doesn't matter where you live if you work for a company that isn't about the superficial. Governments and government contractors thrive on optics and the superficial. Another reason to stay away.

Asher, when you worked for Lehman Brothers, did you wear jeans and t-shirts?

I wear the same stuff at work I wear at home. Jeans, trainers, t-shirts or shirts.

I'm with Asher here. Never trust a tech guy in a suit. Dressing down, (but not like a slob) is a statement. You need me so I don't need to dress up for credibility.

If they are forced into wearing a suit it should be ill fitting, crumpled, possibly with food or coffee spilt on it and they should look incredibly uncomfortable wearing it

                                Yes.

Except for when I went to the Manhattan office. The Manhattan office has an insane douchebag factor, so we had to wear full suits.
