  • Have you experienced the joy of a mechanical keyboard?

Man, I can't go back. Best thing ever for people who type a lot.

I strongly recommend a linear touch keyboard with Cherry MX switches. I picked up a Leopold Tenkeyless Linear Touch Keyboard.

And yes, now that the ESC key is red I use it far more than I should. It's just emotionally satisfying.

(Apologies for the picture. Apple still can't do cameras correctly.)

How is a mechanical keyboard different from any other?

Also, no media keys. If it had those I might get it...
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Media keys? WTF, HC. I am worried about the missing numpad.
          John Brown did nothing wrong.

My current keyboard lacks a numpad because my college desk is too small to fit both a full size keyboard and a bowl of cereal. It does, however, have media keys (specifically it has Fn key and the arrow keys correspond to stop, forward, back and play/pause)

The keyboards that most of you have are the rubber dome keyboards. Some of you are fine with them but once you have a good taste of typing on a mechanical keyboard, you might never want to switch back to your good old keyboard.

Why mechanical keyboard? Because typing (and gaming) in a mechanical keyboard is so much better compared to a standard keyboard. For typing and chatting, it’s less tiring because you don’t need to press the keys all the way to register and it also has a better tactile feedback after pressing a key. Suffice to say, even if you type or chat for hours, your wrists will not feel as tired as before.

A mechanical keyboard uses a single type of switch from a specific manufacturer. So if a vendor releases a new keyboard, they can pick which switch that they want to use on their keyboard. The most popular one is the Cherry MX switch, often used on a gaming keyboard: Cherry MX Blue, Brown, Black, Red, and Clear.

                    Uh, why?

Mechanical keyboards are called mechanical keyboards because they are the only keyboards that use a mechanical switch.

But all keyboards that aren't touch keyboards use a mechanical action.

But it refers to the switch, not the physical pressing of keycaps.

Similarly, a buckling spring keyboard doesn't mean you type by pressing in capless keys.

The fact that it refers to the switch is not obvious.
