  • Sandusky was a Washington outsider. And I bet he ate pizza, too!

    • in the local newspapers over here people are throwing a big stink because most of the food served in schools arent locally produced. they would probly pass out if someone mentioned frozen pizzas to them.

      • There was a bit in the Jamie Oliver show when he tried an experiment he'd successfully used in the UK during his campaign here to improve school lunches. He prepared chicken nuggets so the kids could actually see what went into them. Like the British kids the American kids went 'ewwwww' and 'OMFG!' in all the right places, yet when they were finished and he sarcastically asked who still wanted to try them, the US kids still wanted to. It was like they were so indoctrinated into 'fast food = good' that they managed to shut out the last 5 minutes.

Oh and for all those talking about how parents and schools should be left in charge, half the parents serve complete **** at home anyway, and as that show illustrated, the school boards and local community can be as much the enemy as the fast food companies themselves.

There is a big difference between quitting and redeploying.

            • I'm really tired of the "OMFG, fedgov has no business doing that" argument. That may be the case, but it just deflects the focus away from what's disturbing about this story.

To me, the big issue here is government for sale: special interests essentially paying for the right to rewrite the rules. The fact that our representatives are perfectly willing to sacrifice the overall health of their constituents to keep a few corporations happy isn't a big surprise, but this particular case shows it pretty starkly.

If the effort was toward eliminating federal standards as an overreach of govt authority, I could understand it. But this strikes me as just blatant pandering to corporate interests.

                • In general, nothing. But the pizza they served in my elementary school every Friday was crap. I don't know why anyone would want that nasty cheese and cardboard ****.

                  • Then obviously the problem is that we need more funding so they can serve better pizza.

                    • I approve. Additionally, there needs to be material in the curriculum that teaches students to correctly identify which type of pizza (New York vs. Chicago) is correct.

Yes, this is exactly the right moment to propose increased government spending on pizza. If the teabggers object, we can offset the cost by eliminating something non-essential, like books.

I understand that, jeez. I'm as cynical and jaded as they come.

I was criticizing those who immediately twist the discussion away from the point of the article (and OP).

Nothing, as long as it's not considered a vegetable substitute.
