So the joke really relies on the fact that Palin has a child with learning difficulties and other children who don't, but are notorious or infamous for their behaviour or malapropisms or whatever.

Fortunately over here the Palin clan/extended family aren't particularly noteworthy. Unfortunately we've had this in the media recently:

Ricky Gervais has been criticised by disability groups for repeated use of the word "mong" on his Twitter feed.

The comedian's recent tweets have included phrases like "Good monging everyone", "Night night monglets" and "Two mongs don't make a right".

The word is sometimes used offensively about people with Down's Syndrome.

Mencap said using it could reinforce prejudice but Gervais insists the word has changed meaning and that he never meant to refer to people with Down's.

It seems sort of odd bothering with the joke given that Palin hasn't really been in the news lately anyways. I also can't say I'm a big fan at poking fun at someone with Down's.
