They definitely got subsidized loans from the government and many of those (a la Solyndra) came from the stimulus; it was widely spoken about back in 2009-2010 because REEs are needed for things like wind turbines and solar panels. MolyCorp may have raised additional funding on the bond market, I would be surprised if they hadn't, but they definitely got subsidized loans from both the state government and the federal government as part of green energy intiatives and other industrial assistance.

This would be great news if we actually develop it. As others have said REEs aren't really all that rare but they're costly to extract and can be very environmentally damaging (all that low level radioactive waste left over) still anything we can produce here should be produced here. What we really need to start doing to processing the ore here too as that is where most of the value added (and thus profits) occurs.

Why can't I find any mention of stimulus funding for Mountain Pass, then? There are plenty of references online to Molycorp (correct capitalization) privately raising funds, but I couldn't find any about stimulus funding. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that you're wrong, as usual.

When the bubble pops, and the banks start to sink, the weaknesses of crony capitalism are going to come to the surface. It will tear a big hole in China's image as a wise and growing power. The second problem, the one that will probably dismantle the whole edifice of modern China is the demographic catastrophe that's brewing. China has benefited from a tremendous bulge in working age people, and a relative decline in the elderly and youth. Once this generation of workers reaches retirement age, there simply won't be enough workers to sustain them and the economic growth that the CCP demands. The One Child policy is a massive economic distortion, one that will lead to economic stagnation that'll make Japan look healthy by comparison. China has only been able to compete with the United States by burning itself out.

Instead you have medicare, Chinese will roll you over like nothing, unless you start working for 100USD per month, and let your elderly survive (or not) in any way they can - you are toast.
