  • Where to find America's best hot dogs?

This will be a multiple choice poll. I've recently been on a hot dog bender and I'm hoping to hear which places folks here at poly consider the best hot dog restaurants in America (well, and Canada since they're practically the same place ). So vote in the poll and tell us why you voted the way you did.

I voted for: Hot Doug's (never eaten there but really want to since everyone raves about it), Shake Shack (over hyped but damn good), Papaya King (everyone says their NYC location is better than their LA location but I've only had LA), Nathan's Famous (more of a reflex than a claim that they make a great dog because it's kind of meh), Wald's (their house made smoked hot dogs are the bomb especially when topped with bacon, avocado, and chili), Sonic (best fast food dog hands down), Sonoran Dog (best push cart hot dog; I always stop when in Arizona), and Portillo's (again never tried but heard good things so I want to try).

At least I'm honest about it and admitted I've never actually eaten there. It was more an "I want to eat there" type vote.

BTW I forgot to add in Miller's. They're a hot dog chain out of northern California.

Edit: Damn it, I also forgot Dogzilla.

Five Guys is horrible or at least their burgers are. I've never bothered with their dogs but if they're as bad as their crappy burgers than they will never be listed on one of my multiple choice polls.

Is there another common meaning of the phrase "hot dog" which I am not aware of, or are you actually discussing who does the best job of grilling and topping a cheap sausage full of "all beef" animal parts ground into a fine paste and stuffed into a synthetic wrapper?

A lot of them use natural casings rather than synthetic wrappers. Some are even kosher.

I'm kind of actually craving a hot dog right now. The closest place to my work that serves them, however, is Five Guys. Or Safeway. I've never had hot dogs from Five Guys, because who the **** goes to a burger place to get hot dogs. But the alternative is buying Hebrew National hot dogs from Safeway and nuking them in the office microwave.

Well, I was not aware that there was a hot dog chain called wienerschnitzel, apparently run by someone who doesn't realize that the name doesn't refer to any kind of sausage at all.

I think it used to be called Der Wienerschnitzel but they changed their name to just Wienerschnitzel. It's basically a low end fast food hot dog place which started in the early 60's.

According to Wiki it has restaurants in California, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Washington, and Guam.
