They claim it is the rate that your liver can process alcohol, something that they made very sure to inform us was not something that could be sped up by drinking coffee or taking ritalin.

HC has brought up a very important point. The liver's detox rate is key. You have to drink faster that it can filter in order to build up a healthy blood alcohol level. Remember that drinking is both a race to get drunk, and then an endurance competition to stay drunk. So get to where you're comfortable, then have another drink every half hour until you pass out.
