The inevitable counter-argument is that soldiers are expected to sacrifice their lives to defend their country. If being imprisoned and even executed for their mere existence is a consequence then so be it. Death, too, is a consequence soldiers must accept on enlistment.
The result of this exchange is that terrorists will be released. Needless to say it does not strike me as strategically sound.
But people do not always think strategically; nor are they always right on every issue. Make the argument against the deal rather than condescending towards those in favour of it. Seriously speaking, this seems like potentially a bad deal for Israel, yes. But then they have elections to win, don't they?
Besides, some of those 1000 are bound to be innocent and/or harmless, so it's the utilitarian thing to do after all.Comment
