Not necessarily. People don't always live in the slums forever.

He actually does make a valid point that most 3rd world slums lack basic sanitation and so have disease rates reminiscent of some 17th century European slum. It wasn't until the 18th century that cities even became population stable because the longer you were there the more likely you were to die from crowd diseases so cities had to be constantly refilled by people from the countryside. Many slums still have that problem to this day but, yes, there is often more economic opportunity even if it's manual labor or selling snacks on a street corner.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostSo your key observation here, DaShi, is that cities are not better in absolutely every respect than the countryside. But I don't think city dwellers have to swim surging rivers to get to school, even if they have to deal with violent crime. And although there are communicable diseases, unlike the countryside, cities have doctors.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Don't worry about it. The next step in the evolution is that wealthy people move back to the country, and improvements to the rural infrastructure tend to follow in their wake. The genesis of the "evil Finn" concept- Evil, evil Finland
