It's so well preserved you can even distinguish colors. This is a really cool discovery.

It's very rare for such soft biological items to be preserved for so long. This reminds me of the case a few years back where paleontologists actually found some 65 million year old unfossilized T-Rex jerky. Preserving biological material for that long is practically unheard of.

Most of California was either an island arch or a shallow off shore area during the time in question so there isn't much to find other than sea animals. There have been a few discoveries but mostly dead animals that floated out to sea.
