  • A beamer question!!!

    Serious thread though.

    Beamer = projector

Does anyone have a lot of experience with these? If so, how do you experience the difference between LCD projectors, DLP projectors, and the mini-projectors?

It is now only a matter of time before we get a racist one of these...

As for beamers, I never understood what people liked about them. Only douchebags seem to have one in their garage.

I deal with dozens of DLP projectors every day and they are utter crap.

Need one for my office. Used to do it on a big screen, but I want to combine projection with writing on the ideapaint.

I thought they were inferior to the LCD ones - but for some reason they´re generally more expensive?

No idea. All I know is most of them have issues with colour wheels. They become washed out really quickly...

For the record, this is exactly the product my company makes...except more modern.

wow, that looks like neat technology a techsavvy person would get a real stiffy from... but something tells me these SMART systems go at 8000 dollars+

whereas the paint was 500 dollars and the beamer will be 400.

You can get the cheap, entry-level "American School" grade systems for $2000.

"European School" grade systems are about $3000, "Canadian School" grade systems are about $4000.

Those prices aren´t too bad, actually, considering what you get.

You have some real neato technology there, chief. that Smart table caught my eye. I´ve been thinking about using that for non-classroom purposes. How much do those go for? Are they tough? (You have no idea how many broken keyboards I´ve had to replace). Can I link them together so that they can exchange data? Assuming it can run proprietary programs, which language does it have to be in?

SMART Tables are extremely tough. They're designed for pre-schools through grade 3.

They'll run on virtually every computer. Windows, Mac, and Linux. The corporate software (Meeting Pro, Ideas, etc) is Windows-only. We provide an SDK with COM APIs, .NET bindings, and a Mac library (Cocoa). If you don't want a full-fledged computer, we have "appliances" which run on either Windows XP, Linux, or Android.

We make one SMART Table that's actually 20 feet long and 6 feet tall. Supports a total of 2500 simultaneous touches. The only client for that has been the US military because you can imagine how expensive it is...

I´m guessing the multitouch API in Windows 7 is a kindergarten tool compared to the possibilities of your program...

The tech for the tables is actually pretty interesting. It's similar to Surface (only we did it first and have the patents to prove it) in that it uses an array of cameras underneath to track contact points. We use GPU-based software to triangulate precise touch points (within half a millimeter of accuracy). The tables support 40 simultaneous touches. It could support more if we beef up the GPU some more.

Windows abstracts a lot of the cooler stuff. It'll send you gesture events, and if you want to you can get some filtered raw points from it. But our SDK lets you go a lot closer to the metal, since we implement our apps using the same one.

We've got some software that can track where people are standing infront of the board by using data from the edge of the camera (which looks beyond the edge of the board). It helps us assign which touches belong to which user.

We had our first touch-based product in 1991. A lot of people have made a lot of advances here. Some of which we license to Microsoft and Apple.
