well i've seen a few UKIP people who i would describe as socialists. people who used to be labour but are just very hostile to the EU and so found a home in UKIP. it's often hard to make out UKIP positions on issues apart from europe, as it seems to be the one thing that unites them. as you say though they do attract a lot of nutters.

Let's be honest, David Cameron really seems to have no use for old troglodite social values. One wonders if he was pleased with the LibDem coalition so he could do things he wanted to do in the social field while doing some conservative stuff (ie, budget deficits do matter - traditional conservative financial stuff, not the crazy right wing American "conservative" no taxes ever stuff) in the financial field.

Please. This gets no where without the support of the Conservative government. I'm sure that the LibDems wouldn't walk about because there is full civil partnerships for gays, but not "marriage".

This comes from a Liberal Democrat motion passed at the Liberal Democrat conference in 2010. They were the first (and only) party supporting equal status for same sex marriage, and they have now moved this through the coalition so that this will become law.

Yes, they can only do it with the support of the Conservative part of the government, but the Conservatives can only pass any of their policies with the support of the Lib Dems. People can't blame the Lib Dems for every Conservative policy that goes through with one breath, then give the Conservatives credit for every Liberal Democrat policy that goes through with the other. It's ridiculous.

And to anyone who has reservations, I say: Yes, it's about equality, but it's also about something else: commitment. Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other. So I don't support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I'm a Conservative.

This makes me proud to be a British conservative. For the last few years it's been hard to use the c word due to the taint of american republicanism, but this just goes to highlight the vast gulf between the two.

While I'm sure it was pressure from the Left that made this possible, it's hard for me to read that quote from Cameron and conclude he was dragged kicking and screaming.
