  • If there's a better spice than cumin I'd like to know about it!

Hello! It's me again, your favorite on-again off-again poster of pedestrian threads.

The thread title tells the story. Now I await the collective wisdom of Apolyton in my neverending quest for the best condiment!

In other words: What's your favorite spice?

One of my favorite Chinese dishes is cumin lamb. I usually order it with spicy carp, fried rice, and egg drop soup. Throw in a few soup dumplings and you have yourself a pretty good meal for two.

Cinnamon. It's value in savory dishes is hugely underrated.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I do like cinnamon. I've tried adding it to dishes that might not seem like it's a perfect fit for, and it's like it takes complete control of the taste! It's a very powerful spice, and I respect it for that very quality.

Sounds like it! I wish there were good Chinese restaurants within a reasonable distance though

                There is no "curry" spice.

                ACK!

This thread is aching for a copycat.

It's unbelievable how, when you give up salt your salt sense improves to before unheard of levels. Since I threw the devil by the wayside I've developed an almost extrasensory sense of salt recognition. And it ain't pretty, I tell ya!

I have too much respect for cumin to do that.

The same is true of most any flavoring, I imagine. The virtue of salt isn't its own flavor but the way it enhances other flavors. But if you don't like it, fair enough.
