  • Since the CivIV Forum is Dead

i'm going to repost something i posted there...

i finally brought civ 4 and the expansions about a year ago and i've played the game quite a bit. to be honest i'm a little bit bored of it, so i'm looking for some things to spice up the game. i've found a couple of resources online, but the problem is that there seem to be so many modpacks, scenarios etc. that i don't know where to start. i'm on a fairly slow connection so i can't download everything and try it. i need to be fairly discriminating, so i'm asking you folks to do the discriminating for me.

    1) what are the modpacks people would recommend for civIV to enhance the general playing experience?
    2) are there any good ones which cover pre-history and/or the ancient and classical periods?
    3) any others that people would recommend trying?

You can join us over at www.realmsbeyond.net/forums, we play quite a lot of PBEM and pitboss games. There is also a stash of decent scenarios if you want to play them.

I'd second FFH2, but tbh, it's pretty easy to beat because the AI doesn't know how to play the game. It's really good for MP though.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

          +1

RB is where you want to be for PBEM games (you can waste many a happy hour reading other people's spoiler threads), and FFH II is an amazing amount of fun (for PBEM games anyway).

If you want regular BTS play with mods, grab BUG mod. It doesn't change the gameplay directly, but the interface add ons are freaking awesome.

If you are finding SP boring.....are you playing at Immortal/Deity level? If not......crank the difficulty a bit. Getting WTFpwned at a new difficulty level helped me keep my interest level up for awhile.

It also reminded me of the reason I played and enjoyed D&D to begin with, way back in the 80's-early90's. This reason is called:strategic roleplaying or tactical roleplaying.

When I lost interest in Fallout:New Vegas it wasn't because I didn't like Fallout anymoar, it was because I had beat the game already, and the whole notion of Hardcore Mode and "pretending i am actually the person in the game" wore out its welcome very quick. Professional game critics like Yahtzee back up my statement. Another reason I cant play Grant Theft Auto 3. But playing Fallout or Oblivion like its an JRPG is an interesting twist... don't pretend or attempt to try to reason how the character is thinking the same thoughts you are, just play how that type of character would play. If you want to play as a Bandit, play on easy level so you can get away with light armor and weapons, kill guards, raid towns, steal and plunder. Not really my cup of tea but you get the idea. Don't approach it like FONV would and pretend you have to eat and drink and poop on a regular schedule. That is borderline obsession and psychosis IMO.

How does this fit into Civ you say? If you have to ask you are not paying attention.

I now play Civ not for the competition, but for Role Playing that I am actually commanding that particular civ, and not just picking the civ with the best stuff. If you have to play on an easier difficulty then do so. I do. My current game I am the Greeks and I am building stuff that I think Greeks would build, researching techs that the Greeks would get, I didn't even build libraries until I got Alphabet because I decided my people needed an actual written language in order to build such things. You notice I don't go all out into realism with regards to arguing why it took 30 years to build a boat, my leader never dies, how my unit that got wiped out to the last few men suddenly logistically restocked its forces behind enemy lines after a course of 50 years. Those types of things is the line of thinking that makes you play a different games because Civ isnt "Real" enough. But to play tactically and still enjoy pretending you are actually the Mongols with your Keshiks with only Mongol techs and Mongol improvements attacking your stronger neighbor when peace would be the better option is IMHO Sid's original vision of what Civilization is supposed to be about. Not how close to real life the graphics and the dates are, who can beat the game on the hardest level fastest, and how big Cleo's knockers should be. I also have quick combat and stack attack on, because the battle animations are silly in my mind these are large regiments of forces squaring off, not some wandering band of archers taking on a few cavemen.

Playing Civ SP like its an MP game is not the way to play SP. SP and MP Civ are two completely different animals and I think its time we cage them in different pens.
AAhz, you are as dumb as a stump.

AAHZ has a fair point in playing the game how he wants to play it to make it interesting for him. What's dumb about that, Thoth?

this is actually the best AAHZ post I have ever seen... and civ IV mods - check at Civ Fanatics... quite a few to chose from

Reflexive answer......Didn't read, just assumed Aazz was being a moron.
