Sempra (formerly Enron) owns SDG&E and they wanted to build a coal fired power plant but the state wouldn't let them so they built it in Yuma right across the state line and bring the power in. Also, the whole southwest and northwest Mexico is on one grid so if you lose part of the grid you can get a cascade of failures which takes the whole region out. Remember how the whole east coasts of the US and Canada got knocked out a few years back? The other big problem is both of the nuclear plants here shut down as a precaution thus resulting in big power cuts.

Here's some pictures of the blackout I found on the net.

They shut down the airport due to the blackout so loads of travelers were stuck for 12 hours longer then they thought.

People went to the stores to buy ice and bottled water but as always they formed neat lines with no disorder.

A lot of people decided to just go to the beach and treat it like a holiday.

Even with the power out folks still wanted their beer.

Several of the pizza places stayed open though cooking the pizzas in wood fired ovens while customers ate by candle light.

Compare how San Diego handled the blackout to how the selfish pr!cks in Orange County faired. While in San Diego individual citizens took over directing traffic (so the traffic kept flowing) until the SDPD showed up to take over but the snobby little brats in OC couldn't be bothered to that and instead they just all tried to muscle their way into the intersections resulting in giant gridlock with cars going no where. So in San Diego things kept running orderly but in snobby OC their own selfishness resulted in roads being impassable.

I'm trying to figure out if this is an elaborate joke.

Here's how civil and awesome San Diego is: its murder rate is at record lows and it's still twice Calgary's.

Compared to the rest of the US it's has the lowest violent crime rate of any large city in the country. Yes, Canada has lower but you don't have the violent southern rednecks to deal with.

You would have the lowest violent crime rate if Honolulu and San Jose didn't exist.

It might vary year to year but it's always either the least violent or in the top three. Also I'm not sure if Honolulu and San Jose count as big cities.

How do you arbitrarily define big city?

San Jose has about a million people. 10th largest city in the US.

I'd guess at least 1 million would make a good cut off.

Incidentally, the rest of the world agrees on 500,000.
