  • Poll: Americans want best and brightest to be teachers

Americans favor recruiting high-achieving high school students to become teachers, and would encourage the brightest person they know to become a teacher if he or she expressed an interest in doing so. Most consider teaching to be the result of natural talent rather than training.

But do Americans want to pay more taxes so teachers can earn "best and brightest" salaries? Probably not...

Good, as it's a stupid idea.

Precisely, they want the best and brightest to be teachers here. But quite frankly, the pay is nowhere near enough...I earn the same amount as the top of a headteacher's scale here...with nowhere near the hassle. So no thanks.

Indeed. The problem with Americans* is they want to spend but they don't want to pay.

Thankfully people can exercise self interest.

The 'best and brightest' unfortuantly means those with doctorates and 1st class degrees in the mind of Gove etc. Not necessarily those best suited for teaching in a crap school in Newcastle-upon-Tyne as being academically able grants you very few of the skills you'll need in such places.

I thought we had all agreed that Hull was going to be our go-to example for a ****ty English city, just as Philadelphia is for the United States.

Unlike Philly and Al, I left Hull and have no intention of returning there. I am sure Philadelphia has draws in comparison though.

I believe too teaching should be a highly paid and regarded position.

The job sucks, but if *everyone* is a good teacher, it doesn't suck anymore...
