  • Summary, because this is just getting boring:

I define humanity as sentient homo sapiens. The scientific community has a general consensus that fetuses can't feel anything until the third trimester (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetal_pain ). Thus, I believe first and second trimester abortions should be legal and third trimester abortions illegal.

You may (and probably will) disagree, but that doesn't make you correct and me incorrect. It means we have different philosophies. And you don't have a right to force your philosophy on me.

    • I don't distinguish between homo sapien and humanity. Do you?
Yes. That's the point, one I thought I'd made quite clear.

What kind of human rights does a human corpse have? It's homo sapien...

But it's not a potential life, it is a life. Biologically, a fetus is a living organism. A human fetus is a human. It is potentially an astronaut or plumber or serial rapist, but it is from conception human and alive. If human rights are strictly a religious invention, then maybe religion has its purpose in the modern world after all.

That's a much better argument than trying to say that a fetus isn't human. I can live with it.

A human corpse is dead. A fetus is not dead. Until it's killed of course.

              As is fungus.

A human fetus is a human.
A homo sapien fetus is homo sapien.

It is not human until it is sentient.

                • Instead of banning abortion, I think homosexuality should be encouraged. You can look fabulous, be fit, and save a life all at once. And you'll never have an unexpected pregnancy.

It's the common definition, sure. However, there is something called intraspecific parasitism, in which members of same species steal nutrients from eachother. Whether or not the organism is inside another doesn't really matter for the argument at hand, like Asher pointed out at the beginning of #252.
