They really didn't listen to it very much to begin with.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

The 80s disco scene was arguably the creative nadir of American pop music.

In 1977 when disco arrived with Saturday Night Fever, it was a big deal at clubs. It was easy to dance to and people had fun with it.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

The issue is America has moved past Madonna. Madonna was huge in the late 80's and early 90's. She doesn't sell as much anymore in America because, well, she's 20 years passed her day. It's like how later Michael Jackson albums didn't sell well in the US but were huge overseas."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Though the line between 70's soul and disco is very hazy."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Okay having listened to that, I'm convinced the issue is it's Madonna and she's passe.Originally posted by Barnabas View PostMadonna's dance music is successful outside the USA, only in the USA her dance music bombs

This song was a hit in much of Europe and the rest of the world for example

Modern 'urban' music tends to have a lot of dance music and is still very popular in the US.

Like what genre is this Chris Brown song?

Or take Chris Brown's domestic abuse victim:

If that's considered the same genre as Lady Gaga and Madonna, then yeah, that stuff is definitely still very popular in the US."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Then what about rap like this...

If Madonna were 30, Black, and had some rappers on her album, she'd probably be huge in America "Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi "Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

errr...no. it was americans after all who invented house music and were the originators of techno. it's probably true to say that since disco electronic music hasn't really been integral to american popular culture like rock or hip-hop (although it penetrates and influences it other ways). however that's not the same as people not listening to it.Originally posted by Barnabas View PostI was told that since Disco, Americans had stopped listening to Dance Music (unless they were gay)

sloww, disco is older than that, much older. the first records were in the early 70s. in terms of public conciousness, then '73 or '74 would be a good start date. in terms of creativity, personally i think most of the best stuff came later on, especially hinrg and italo disco, but that's a matter of taste i guess.

dans, madonna has always used top dance music producers to make her records and actually has some foresight about trends in electronic music. she produces an album of pop songs based on a particular electronic sound either as it's becoming big or even a little in advance."The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

Hip hop came directly out of disco and early electronic music.

Songs like Rapper's Delight or The Breaks had disco instrumentation. Songs like Planet Rock were electronic.

Really, disco did not die. It turned into hip hop."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

So those Chris Brown, Rihanna, Ne-yo, and Flo Rida songs are dance music in that style that's supposedly 'dead' in America, right? Doesn't seem dead to me. Granted, all those artists make other sort of music, as well; not just dance songs."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi
