HOUSTON – A South Houston man accused in the death of a local nun appeared in court Tuesday to face intoxication assault charges.
Police said 19-year-old Marcos Garza was intoxicated when he crashed his GMC pickup into Sister Huong Do's Honda Civic at the intersection of Main and Minnesota in South Houston around 5 a.m. Sunday morning.
Do was trapped behind the steering wheel of her car, and Garza’s truck had heavy damage.
Police said Garza ran a stop sign prior to the crash.
Do was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead several hours later.
Garza was initially arrested on suspicion of DWI. Investigators said he refused the breath test and was taken in for a mandatory blood draw.
He was later released on $100,000 bond.
Do was a nun with the St. Catherine Convent (Vietnamese Dominican Sisters), located in the 5000 block of Gasmer. She was reportedly headed to a local Catholic church to help teenage students with their confirmation retreat when she was killed.
