  • Why did DSK get paid so little?

He was taking home approximately 500k USD tax-free. Now, while such minimal remuneration is appropriate for a public position like state comptroller or US president where no marketable skills are required, one would assume that the head of the IMF would be able to find a mid level position at a bank and increase his pay substantially.

Perhaps quasi-governmental organizations are more tolerant of forcible rape than financial firms are, and this is a major draw for those who work there. If so, we will see a real drop in the quality of their people if they change their attitude...

You aren't accounting for the substantial in-kind compensation (status).

Still 500k sounds like a pittance for such a position.

the status is huge and you actually get to have a say in how things are run, as opposed to just being rich.

Yes, but I'm afraid 500k wouldn't ward against influence bartering at this level. (But is there any amount that would?)

QFT. Heading the IMF offers a lot more prestige than being in a mid-level position at a private bank. It's a terrible job for rapists, because if you get caught the whole world will hear about it and you will have to endure the media circus.

Plus, if someone actually cares about making the world better off, being in a position of influence like head of the IMF actually means something to them.

Infinite probably. All expenses covered, best hotels, etc. Plus, DSK supposedly had
a deal with Air France where they reserved a first class seat for him, that is, if he
showed up without a ticket, they'd bump someone with a ticket to make space for
                  him.

Cool. Nothing quite like having your own getaway airline.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Travelling for work a lot gets old pretty fast.

Well if you think about it, traveling can't be that big of an expense if you fly normal
airlines. I have 365 days in my year and DSK has no more. If he flew every day it
                          would be, what, 365 x $2000 = ~ $800 000 which is not that much for a big
                          corporation/institution.
